In brief (30 s)
  • Prioritise regulated savings accounts: the Livret A and the LDDS are at 1.70% since 1 August 2026 (rate set by the State, revised every 1 February and 1 August), free of tax and social contributions. Caps: €22,950 (Livret A) and €12,000 (LDDS).
  • Beyond these caps, bank savings accounts (Distingo, Cashbee, Boursorama…) offer immediate availability but their interest is taxed (flat-rate withholding tax of 30% by default).
  • The boosted rates advertised by bank savings accounts are temporary (often a few months) and capped, before reverting to the base rate.
  • ⚠️ This comparison does not constitute personalised advice: fill up your regulated savings accounts first. Check up-to-date rates and terms with each institution.

The savings account remains the benchmark for precautionary savings available at any time. The first step is to fill up the regulated savings accounts — Livret A and LDDS, at 1.70% since 1 August 2026, with a rate set by the State and interest free of tax and social contributions within the caps. Beyond that, bank savings accounts take over: their boosted rates, often temporary and capped, come with taxation (flat-rate withholding tax of 30% by default) that must be factored into the calculation of the real return. This comparison is an editorial ranking scored out of 100 according to an identical grid for all institutions; it is not a substitute for a personalised study of your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Bank savings account or regulated savings account?

The regulated savings account (Livret A, LDDS) has a rate set by the State — 1.70% since 1 August 2026 — and its interest is exempt from income tax and social contributions, within the caps (€22,950 for the Livret A, €12,000 for the LDDS). The bank savings account sometimes offers a temporary boosted rate but its interest is taxed (flat-rate withholding tax of 30% by default). The logic is complementary: fill up your regulated savings accounts first.

How is the Livret A rate set?

The Livret A rate (and that of the LDDS, which is aligned with it) is set by the State and revised twice a year, on 1 February and 1 August, according to a formula taking into account inflation excluding tobacco and a short-term euro-zone money-market rate. It rose to 1.70% on 1 August 2026.

Are the boosted rates of bank savings accounts durable?

No: promotional offers generally apply to a capped amount and for a limited period (often a few months), before reverting to the base rate. Read the terms of the offer in force before subscribing.

Is a savings account guaranteed?

Savings accounts at licensed institutions benefit from the deposit guarantee up to €100,000 per depositor and per institution (FGDR). When a fintech relies on a partner bank, it is that bank's licence that carries the guarantee. Check the account-holding institution.
