In brief (30 s)
  • Trade Republic focuses on mobile simplicity and low fees (€1 order, even €0 on investment plans) and now offers the PEA; it does not offer options or complex derivatives.
  • Bourse Direct (a French broker founded in 1996) remains a benchmark for the PEA with French-speaking customer service; Interactive Brokers targets very broad access to international markets for experienced investors.
  • Compare the account type (PEA, securities account), the fees per order and the taxation; online, the Pacte law caps brokerage fees at 0.5% of the order amount.
  • ⚠️ Investing in the stock market carries a risk of capital loss. This comparison does not constitute personalised advice: check the regulation, fees and up-to-date terms with each broker.

Choosing a stock broker means balancing fees per order, investment universe and platform comfort, without forgetting the tax framework of the chosen account type (PEA or securities account) and the broker’s regulation. Online brokerage fees are capped by the Pacte law at 0.5% of the order amount, but taxation, currency exchange fees and customer service also make the difference over the long term. Investing in stocks or ETFs carries a risk of capital loss, heightened by leveraged products. This comparison is an editorial ranking scored out of 100 according to an identical grid for all brokers; it is not a substitute for advice tailored to your profile and investment horizon.

Frequently asked questions

PEA or securities account?

The PEA offers a favourable tax framework after five years of holding (gains remain subject to social contributions), but limits the investment universe to eligible securities and is capped on contributions. The securities account is more open (global markets, all products) but its gains are taxed at the flat-rate withholding tax. The choice depends on your strategy.

Are brokerage fees capped?

Yes for orders placed online: the Pacte law requires brokerage fees not to exceed 0.5% of the order amount (1.2% through another channel such as phone or branch). But the displayed fees are not the only criterion: the taxation of the account type, currency exchange fees and the quality of the platform also matter.

How are assets protected at a broker?

Brokers regulated in the European Union apply asset segregation rules and are covered by guarantee mechanisms. Check the licence (AMF in France, or the regulator of the country of establishment) and the applicable guarantee fund before opening an account.

Is investing in the stock market risky?

Yes: markets fluctuate and an investment in stocks or ETFs carries a risk of capital loss. Leveraged products (CFDs, derivatives) amplify this risk — the AMF points out that a large majority of retail investors lose money on them. Only invest amounts you do not need in the short term.
