In brief (30 s)
  • The PACTE law (2019) requires a self-employed person to have a dedicated account (not necessarily a "business" one) only if their turnover exceeds €10,000 for two consecutive calendar years; companies, however, must have a dedicated account from the moment they are set up.
  • Qonto is regularly cited for the richness of its management tools and accounting integration; Shine targets the self-employed (cheque/cash deposits), Blank micro-entrepreneurs and the liberal professions.
  • These neobanks work on a monthly subscription basis: from ~€0 on entry-level offers to several tens of euros excl. VAT depending on the volume of transactions and cards.
  • Compare the caps, the extra fees and the included services according to your activity — fee schedules change, check the up-to-date offer with the institution.

The business account has become much more than a simple bank account: it centralises invoicing, expense tracking and export to accounting. However, you have to distinguish the legal obligation of a dedicated account — imposed on companies from the moment they are set up and on the self-employed above €10,000 of turnover for two consecutive years — from the convenience of a true business account. Depending on your status (company, self-employed, micro-entrepreneur), priorities differ between fees, caps and management tools. This comparison is an editorial ranking scored out of 100 using a grid that is the same for all offers, to help you choose based on your actual line of business.

Frequently asked questions

Is a business account mandatory?

You have to distinguish the dedicated bank account from a true business account. Companies (SARL, SAS, etc.) must have a dedicated account from the moment they are formed. The self-employed person, on the other hand, is only required to (PACTE law of 2019) if their annual turnover exceeds €10,000 for two consecutive calendar years; a simple current account separate from the personal account may then suffice, and a "business" account is not legally imposed. Check the rules that apply to your situation.

What is the difference between a true business account and a dedicated account?

A dedicated account is a separate account reserved for the business, which can be a simple current account. A business account (offered by business neobanks or banks) adds management services (invoicing, expense reports, accounting export, high-limit cards). The dedicated account meets the legal obligation; the business account provides additional tools.

Can you deposit cheques and cash?

Not all business neobanks allow it, or do so with specific fees and delays. Shine, for example, offers cheque and cash deposits depending on the offer. If your activity involves cheques or cash, check this point before subscribing.
